The Ultimate Guide to Mexico Destinations: Hand-Picked 37 Best Places to Visit in Mexico

37 Best Places to Visit in Mexico
I love Mexico.
It has something for everyone, for every stage of life, and for every mood.
Mexico can make you feel like Indiana Jones with its pyramids, ruins, and cenotes (I’m talking to you, Tulum!) Or like royalty with its resorts (including all inclusive ones).
Let’s not even talk about the food. Oh my God! The food is amazing (unless I combine food with adventure, I’d gain weight like a balloon).
Okay, okay…I’m getting ahead of myself.
But honestly, what I love most about Mexico is talking about it and its best places to visit, and helping you make the best decisions to ensure your vacation leaves an exquisitely indelible mark.
Remember, when you turn 90, the most important thing in life will probably be your experiences and Mexico will be one, I can assure you that (and remember to invite me to your 90th birthday party! We’ll enjoy it together at the nursing home, sharing stories of our travels).
Here I will show you in my opinion and experience the best places to visit in Mexico.
For the sake of space, I will go over each one briefly, but you will find links to more detailed information in the article.
37 Best Places to Visit in Mexico
This is a incredibly superbly comprehensive Mexico guide, but I’ll also create lots of posts offering exactly the information you need…
…and even some you didn’t think you needed, because along the way, you’ll pick up various tricks to get the most out of your trip.
Let’s start with the Top Mexico Destinations. I have to begin with Mexico’s fantastic four: Cancun, Mexico City, Cabo San Lucas, and Tulum.
They’re the most visited destinations, and for good reason… or many reasons, which I’ll detail in each link below.
Best Places to Visit in Mexico
1. Mexico city (CDMX): A Vibrant Metropolis

Mexico City, or CDMX for its acronym in Spanish (Ciudad De México) is a great choice to begin your Mexican adventure.
It is huge…HU-MUN-GOUS…
…Actually, it is the fifth in the world (and just behind Sao Paulo, Brazil by a hair), and back in time probably the largest one, when named Tenochtitlan, just by the time the conquistadores arrived.
In my head, Mexico City is also like a chocolate box, ready to be savored.
And just like your chocolate box, you don’t know what you are gonna get…
…but each one of the options in Mexico City are as tasty as the next.
Centro Historico and Zocalo: Step Back in Time

For starters, I enjoy so much visiting the Centro Historico and Zocalo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
BTW: You’re gonna read that a LOT of places in Mexico are UNESCO World Heritage Site
Those are a must-see places, believe me.
Iconic buildings abound, like the stunning Palacio Bellas Artes (the most photographed building in the country), ancient Templo Mayor, and majestic Catedral Metropolitana.
Walking these historic streets is like stepping into a time machine. You’ll be transported to a time of greatness and beauty.
Chapultepec + Chic Neighborhoods
Mexico City has beautiful parks perfect for relaxing, like Parque Chapultepec, one of the largest urban parks on Earth. It’s a green haven in the heart of the city, offering a much-needed respite from the hustle and bustle.
Charming neighborhoods like Coyoacan, Polanco, Roma, and Condesa offer their own unique character. Stunning street art, cozy cafes, intimate parks – each has its own charm.
Museums in Mexico City + Teotihuacán: Endless Art and Culture
Mexico City is a paradise for art and history enthusiasts. With over 150 museums, you’ll be spoiled for choice (Take that Paris and your measles 130 museums in second place in the world!)
The National Museum of Anthropology is a must-visit. Its incredible collection of artifacts tells the story of Mexico’s rich cultural heritage.
For a more intimate experience, head to the Frida Kahlo Museum. Explore the life and work of one of Mexico’s most beloved artists.
Teotihuacan Ruins

One must-see attraction is definitively Teotihuacan.
It is just one hour from Mexico City.
The colossal pyramids will leave you in awe…
For me it is still my most stunning and enduring memory from my first trip to Mexico City…but what can I say, I’m a history nerd.
Mexico City is a Foodie’s Heaven
Mexico City’s culinary scene is diverse and delicious. Street food stalls, high-end restaurants, regional specialties – it have it all.
Sample authentic dishes like tacos, tamales, and mole. Discover new favorites like chilaquiles and avocado ice cream (don’t be shy and try them all).
And if you feel really brave, try to add some hot sauce with made of your favorite chile (not for the faint of heart, you’ve been warned).
Xochimilco’s Floating Gardens

Xochimilco is like an enchanted place. You will glide along ancient canals in colorful trajinera boats. Enjoy traditional music, food, and drinks amidst breathtaking scenery.
It’s an experience you won’t soon forget, and your Instagram will thank you for it.
Sounds great right? Well, there is more though…

Best Places to Visit in Mexico
2. Tulum, Quintana Roo

Can you believe that Tulum was once an off-the-beaten-path destination (it was a fishing village)?
It has now become one of Mexico’s hottest spots, and one of the best places to visit in Mexico.
I called it my Atlantic headquarters. I stay here while I move around Quintana Roo.
Tulum’s Beaches: White Sands and Turquoise Waters
Tulum’s beaches are the stuff of dreams. White sand, turquoise waters, and smaller crowds than nearby Cancun and Playa del Carmen.
For me, Tulum is my shortest connection with Mexico, especially since I live in Montreal, I’m able to take a direct flight.
Tulum Cenotes

My favorite thing in Tulum is the cenotes. These underwater sinkholes are abundant in the Yucatan and perfect for snorkeling or scuba diving. A dip in these crystal-clear waters is a must.
The most famous Cenote is the Gran Cenote, but there are more…literally thousands more!
No kidding!
Tulum is home to over 1,000 cenotes, and if you wanna be mystic, well, the ancient Mayans believed were portals to the underworld.
Check out these ones too: Cenote Suytun, Cenote Calavera, Cenote Dos Ojos (to dive among stalactites and stalagmites in crystal-clear waters) y Cenote Zacil-Ha.
Tulum’s Ancient Ruins with a View

No visit to Tulum is complete without exploring the ancient Mayan ruins.
Perched atop cliffs overlooking the Caribbean Sea, these ruins offer a glimpse into the past with a view that’s hard to beat.
Just be sure to get there early to avoid the tour buses. Trust me, it’s worth the early wake-up call.
Just Keep Partying, Just Keep Partying…
Back in town, Tulum comes alive at night. With countless options for wining and dining, it’s one of the best places in Mexico to party.
From beachfront bars to jungle-themed clubs, there’s something for everyone. Just be prepared to dance until the sun comes up.
More to Explore in Tulum
While the beaches and ancient ruins are the main draws, there’s so much more to discover in Tulum:
Best Tours to Take in Tulum
To make the most of your visit, consider taking a guided tour:

3. Cancun, Quintana Roo

Cancun is by far Mexico’s most famous coastal destination.
With its picturesque beaches, turquoise waters, and endless activities, it’s no wonder Cancun is a top choice for travelers from around the world.
Cancun Beaches for Every Type of Traveler
Cancun’s beaches are the stuff of dreams. Whether you’re looking to party, relax, or enjoy some family fun, there’s a stretch of sand perfect for you.
The Hotel Zone is where you’ll find the most popular beaches, like Playa Delfines and Playa Forum. These long, sandy shores are lined with resorts and offer plenty of water sports and activities.
But Cancun isn’t just for party-goers. Families will love the calm waters and kid-friendly resorts, while couples can find a romantic escape at luxury hotels like Nizuc and Excellence Riviera.
Explore the Mayan World
Cancun is more than just beaches. It’s also the gateway to the fascinating Mayan World.
Start your journey at the Cancun Mayan Museum, where you can learn about this ancient civilization.
Or what about visiting one of the New Seven Wonders of the World? Well, in Cancun you can! You have nearby ruins like Chichen Itza (take a tour to Chichen Itza).
Ok, you feel like lazy today and don’t want to go out of Cancun? No problem! For a taste of Mayan history right in Cancun, visit the El Rey ruins, located right on the beach in the Hotel Zone.
Cancun Underwater Adventures
Cancun’s beauty extends beneath the surface of the Caribbean Sea.
The Underwater Museum of Art (MUSA) is a must-see, with over 500 submerged sculptures that double as artificial reefs.
Snorkeling and scuba diving are popular activities, thanks to the healthy coral reefs just offshore.
Cancun has Authentic Mexican Flavor
While Cancun’s Hotel Zone may feel like a tourist bubble, venture into the city center and you’ll find a vibrant, authentic Mexican community.
Go for a walk, visit the local markets, and there you can sample street tacos from local vendors, and dance the night away at a salsa club. This is where you’ll get a true taste of Mexican culture and hospitality.
Me? I skip the dancing (two left feet in my case, regretfully), and go right for the food.
Where to Stay in Cancun
Cancun has no shortage of amazing places to stay, from budget-friendly hostels to luxurious all-inclusive resorts. Here are a few top picks:
Explore Beyond Cancun
While there’s plenty to keep you busy in Cancun, don’t miss the opportunity to explore the surrounding Riviera Maya. Some top day trips include:

4. Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco

Puerto Vallarta completes our Fantastic Four Team.
Puerto Vallarta, a stunning beach town on Mexico’s Pacific Coast, it is the exponentially combination of natural beauty, colonial charm, and endless (let me repeat that in capital letters: ENDLESS) activities.
In my experience, Puerto Vallarta is one of the best places to visit in Mexico.
Beaches and Water Activities
Puerto Vallarta has some of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico.
You have Playa Los Muertos (located in the Romantic Zone), a popular (sometimes crowded) spot for sunbathing and swimming.
For a more secluded experience, you have to move to the hidden beach of Playa del Amor at Islas Marietas National Park, accessible only by boat.

Water enthusiasts can enjoy a variety of activities, such as scuba diving, snorkeling, and kayaking.
From December to March, don’t miss the opportunity to witness humpback whales migrating through the area.
Explore the Town
Puerto Vallarta is a colonial town, so walking around is a joy…
Especially if you consider that it is located among the jungle mountains.
You will discover the vibrant architecture, delicious local cuisine, and a lively atmosphere.
Adventure and Excursions
Puerto Vallarta offers a wide range of adventures for thrill-seekers.
Horseback riding on the beach? Checked…
Sky diving? Checked…
Bungee jumping? Checked.
Paragliding? Also checked!
One of the best places to visit in Mexico? double checked!!!
Now, if you are more like me (laid-back experience), take a boat tour to the nearby towns of Yelapa or Nuevo Vallarta, where you can explore some more pristine beaches and lush landscapes.

Nightlife and Entertainment
When the sun goes down, Puerto Vallarta comes alive with its vibrant nightlife.
I love to sip (well, maybe a little more than sip) craft beers at one of the two local breweries or sip on expertly crafted cocktails at the numerous bars.
If dancing is your thing, you are in luck. You can dance the night away at the lively clubs and bars in town.

5. Los Cabos (Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo), Baja California Sur

Looking for a beach vacation that’s a little off the beaten path?
Los Cabos offer a unique landscape of cacti, golden sand, and turquoise waters.
This is literally where Desert Meets the Sea…
…plus Beaches and luxury resorts…
…plus Vibrant Nightlife…
…plus…you get the idea.
Los Cabos is optimally located near the West Coast of North America, drawing travelers to the southern tip of Baja California for decades.
Two Towns, One Unforgettable Destination
Yes, at Los Cabos you got twice the fun for the price of one…
Confused?
The thing is Los Cabos is actually made up of two distinct towns: Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. While they’re only about 20 miles apart (around 32 Km), these sister cities each have their own unique charm.

Cabo San Lucas is the more touristy of the two, known for its lively nightlife, world-class resorts, and the iconic El Arco rock formation.
It’s the perfect spot for those looking to party and soak up the sun.

San Jose del Cabo, on the other hand, offers in my experience a more of a cultural spot, and I would dare to say a more authentic Mexican experience.
With its cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and thriving art scene, it’s a great place to immerse yourself in the local culture.
Where the Desert Meets the Sea
What makes Los Cabos truly special is its stunning natural beauty. Here, the rugged desert landscape meets the sparkling waters of the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean.
I always enjoy taking a boat tour to the famous Arch of Cabo San Lucas, where you can snap a photo of this natural wonder and spot sea lions basking on the rocks.
Sometimes I just head to one of the many wonderful beaches and spend the day there, swimming, snorkeling, or simply relaxing in the sun with my latest read.
A Wildlife Lover’s Paradise
Los Cabos isn’t just about the beaches and nightlife. It’s also a haven for wildlife, particularly during the winter months when whales migrate to the warm waters off the coast.
From December to April, you can take a whale watching tour and spot humpback whales, gray whales, and even the occasional blue whale.
It’s an unforgettable experience that’s not to be missed (definitively better experience that watching it on Nat Geo).
Tee Off in Paradise
If you’re a golf enthusiast, Los Cabos is the place for you. With over a dozen championship courses designed by the likes of Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, it’s no wonder this destination is known as a golfer’s paradise.
Even if you’re not a pro (I raise my hand at this moment), you can still enjoy a round or two while taking in the stunning desert and ocean views.
A Culinary Journey
No trip to Mexico is complete without indulging in the local cuisine, and Los Cabos is no exception. From fresh seafood to traditional Mexican dishes, there’s something to satisfy every palate.
Don’t miss the chance to try some authentic Baja-style fish tacos, or sip on a refreshing margarita while watching the sunset over the ocean.
Where to Stay in Cabo San Lucas and San Jose de Los Cabos
Whether you’re looking for a luxurious resort or a more budget-friendly option, Los Cabos has plenty of accommodations to choose from. Here are a few top picks:
Explore Beyond the Beach
While the beaches are certainly a highlight, there’s so much more to explore in Los Cabos. Some top activities include:
Best Places to Visit in Mexico
6. Merida, Yucatan

Merida, also known as La Ciudad Blanca (The White City), is the colorful capital of Yucatan state, is a captivating destination that blends ancient Mayan traditions with Spanish colonial influences.
It is close to Cancun, Riviera Maya and Tulum, but with a charming small-town feel.
And on top of that, it is safe…THE safest city in Mexico.
So, it is a sought-after permanent (or at least long term) destination by expats and digital nomads alike, and definitively one of the best places to visit in Mexico.
Founded in 1542 on the site of the ancient Mayan city of T’hó, Merida has a long and fascinating history that’s all around the city and you can witness in its architecture, art, and traditions.
The city’s historic center is (once again) a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with stunning colonial buildings in every color of the rainbow.
From the grand Plaza Grande to the mansions of Paseo de Montejo, every street is like a Nat Geo documentary.
Merida is Fun all year round
Merida is pretty, but it doesn’t stop there…
It is also a city that knows how to have a good time and tourists are welcomed to be part of it.
On any given night, you’ll find locals gathering in the streets to dance, sing, and celebrate life. Whether you join in the fun at a street festival or sip a cold cerveza in a cozy cantina (I have to admit, I’m more a beer-guy, so cantinas are my surefire Achilles heel).
Merida Ancient Ruins

Of course, no trip to Merida would be complete without exploring the ancient Mayan ruins that surround the city. Uxmal and Chichen Itza are two of the most famous sites, with towering pyramids and intricate carvings that will take your breath away…
But there are countless other ruins to discover, each with its own unique history and beauty.
Costa Esmeralda: 100 Km of Beaches

Merida is not a beach town…but that is not a problem.
Not when you have a stretch of almost 100 km of beaches nearby…
…and Puerto Progreso, probably the most popular one, just 40 minutes away!
The best beach towns include el Progreso, Chicxulub (try to say it aloud and fast!), and Telchac.
Merida Lifestyle: The Best of All
Also, Yucatecan cuisine is a delicious blend of Mayan and Spanish influences, with dishes like cochinita pibil (slow-roasted pork) and sopa de lima (lime soup) that will make your taste buds sing.
But perhaps the best thing about Merida is its people. Yucatecans are known for their warmth, hospitality, and passion for life. They’ll welcome you into their homes, share their stories, and make you feel like part of the family. It’s this sense of community that makes Merida such a special place to visit.

7. Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo

Just between Cancun and Tulum on Mexico’s stunning Riviera Maya, you will find Playa del Carmen.
Playa del Carmen is a vibrant beach town that offers a balance between relaxation and adventure.
You will find postal-perfect beaches, crystal-clear waters, and endless (really endless) activities…
In my travel experience, it’s out of question Playa del Carmen’s place as one of the best resort towns in Mexico.
Explore the Beaches and Beyond
Playa del Carmen boasts miles of pristine beaches, perfect for soaking up the sun and enjoying water activities like snorkeling, fishing, and yachting.
Here you can check tours for water activities.
Playa Maroma

For a unique experience, head to nearby Playa Maroma, named one of the world’s best beaches by the Travel Channel and Discovery Channel.
And once there, you can’t miss the best overwater bungalows in Mexico, and in my opinion, El Dorado Palafitos is hands down the best one on Playa Maroma.
But there’s more to Playa del Carmen than just beaches.
I really enjoy taking a day trip to the ancient Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, or exploring the stunning underground rivers and caves at nearby eco-parks.
Indulge in Local Flavors and Culture
I said before that Playa del Carmen you find endless activities.
If shopping and food is your thing, you can walk along the famous Fifth Avenue (Quinta Avenida), the heart of Playa del Carmen.
This is a pedestrian-friendly street, lined with shops, restaurants, bars, and clubs, and it offers endless options for dining, shopping, and nightlife.
Bonus: Don’t miss the chance to try authentic Mayan cuisine at La Perla Pixan Cuisine, or visit another Frida Kahlo Museum for a dose of art and culture.
Additional Things to Do in Playa del Carmen
And there is more of course. Here is a brief list:
Best Places to Visit in Mexico
8. Chichen Itza, Mayan Ruins, Yucatan

Chichen Itza, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the Yucatan Peninsula.
This ancient Mayan city, believed to be over 1,500 years old, attracts millions of visitors each year, making it one of the most popular tourist attractions in Mexico.
Good thing is that you can get to Chichen Itza from multiple destinations.
It takes you between 2.5 to 3 hours from Cancun, Tulum, Merida and Playa del Carmen…and even less than an hour from Valladolid!
You can take the easy way by jumping on a tour (which you can get galore on all those places), or drive on your own by renting a car.
Unraveling the Mysteries of El Castillo
The crown jewel of Chichen Itza is the awe-inspiring El Castillo, also known as the Temple of Kukulkan.
I dare to say that by far this is the most famous Mexico Pyramid, which is a lot to say.
This grand pyramid stands tall with 91 steps on each side, totaling 364, plus the top platform, representing the 365 days of the calendar year.
The Mayans were incredibly advanced and were known for their expertise in astronomy, architecture, and mathematics, strategically positioned the buildings to align with the Earth’s rotation and the sun’s position.
Exploring the Astronomical Wonders
Don’t you dare to miss El Caracol! This is a fascinating Astronomical Observatory, where the Mayans once used a telescope to track the planet Venus.
They believed Venus to be a war god and observed its position to determine the optimal time for battle.
If your Mayan history lessons are rusty or (as was my case) close to non-existent, then I would recommend you book a guided tour to fully appreciate the site’s intriguing history and facts.
Pro Savvy Raccoon Tip: You can stay overnight in the area to experience Chichen Itza with fewer crowds.
Top Things to Do once you are at Chichen Itza:

San Miguel de Allende is another UNESCO World Heritage Site and definitively worth the badge as it is a stunning and historic city.

So, not a bad place to include in your bucket list…
It is also a safe city, ranking at the top.
The Iconic Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel

35. Akumal, Quintana Roo

When I think of Akumal, I could think about all inclusive resorts
…or stunning beaches…
…or snorkeling in the coral reefs…
…cenote (again, I know, but they are spectacular)
…but definitively Akumal stands out for the Turtles…
…SWMMING with the Turtles specifically.
I will get to that, but let me tell you that Akumal is located between the popular destinations of Tulum and Playa del Carmen, so it is kind of a hidden gem in the Yucatan Peninsula.
Swimming with Turtles: A Mexico Bucket List Experience
Akumal is famous for its turtle population, and swimming with these majestic creatures is an experience you won’t want to miss.
To ensure the safety of the endangered turtles, the only way to swim with them is by booking a regulated tour.
During your Akumal turtle tour, you’ll need to follow strict guidelines to protect the turtles and their habitat.
Swimmers must maintain a 10-foot (3 m) distance from the sea turtles, allowing them to surface and breathe easily.
The turtle season in Akumal runs from May to November each year, so plan your visit accordingly.
Getting to Akumal
To reach Akumal, you’ll need to fly into Cancun International Airport (CUN) and then make your way to this turtle paradise.
The journey from Cancun to Akumal is a breeze, and you’ll find yourself surrounded by the beauty of the Yucatan Peninsula in no time.
